The Orchestre de l’Opéra national de Paris is one of the oldest orchestras in France. Its origins date back more than three centuries, to the founding by Louis XIV of the Académie royale de Musique. It was for this orchestra that composers such as Lully, Rameau, Gluck, Rossini, Meyerbeer, Verdi, Wagner, Gounod, Massenet, Saint-Saëns, Ravel, Stravinsky, Roussel, Poulenc, and Messiaen wrote some of their masterpieces.
Its 174 musicians perform at the Palais Garnier, the Opéra Bastille, and beyond the walls of the opera houses. Their operatic and choreographic repertoire has continued to expand, and today they occupy a leading position in French and international musical life. Over nearly thirty years, they have worked with conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Georges Prêtre, Zubin Mehta, Christoph von Dohnányi, Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Myung-Whun Chung, James Conlon, Pierre Boulez, Semyon Bychkov, Valery Gergiev, Philippe Jordan, and Gustavo Dudamel.
Exceptional milestones have marked this journey: the premiere of the complete version of Lulu with Pierre Boulez; Saint François d’Assise by Messiaen conducted by Seiji Ozawa; Der Rosenkavalier under the baton of Karl Böhm; Don Giovanni, Sir Georg Solti’s final Mozart production in 1996; and the two Ring cycles conducted by Philippe Jordan. These experiences have profoundly shaped the orchestra’s identity, forged through engagement with some of the most delicate and demanding scores in the repertoire.
This distinctive character is reflected in numerous recordings, which have earned the Orchestre de l’Opéra national de Paris recognition as one of the world’s leading orchestras. It is also brought into sharp focus when its musicians perform in symphonic concerts in Paris or on tour. Such concerts allow them to renew their collaboration with conductors who have led them in the opera pit. The musicians also cultivate their close musical rapport through a chamber music season that is widely open to major works from both past and present repertoires.
Semyon Bychkov has been appointed Music Director of the Opéra national de Paris, effective 1 August 2028. He will serve as Music Director Designate starting 1 August 2026.
