Principal viola of the Paris Opera Orchestra, Pierre Lenert is also a laureate of the international competitions of Markneukirchen, Lionel Tertis, and Maurice Vieux. He is a professor at the École Normale de Musique de Paris and is regularly invited to Japan for masterclasses.
As a soloist and chamber musician, he is a guest at numerous international festivals, including the BBC Proms, Schubertiades, and the Khumo, Gubio, and Marlboro Festivals, among others.
He is the only violist in Europe to have recorded Niccolò Paganini’s 24 Caprices for viola since the complete set was interpreted by Emmanuel Vardi in 1965. His discography includes the complete works for viola and piano by Henry Vieuxtemps, as well as several recital albums dedicated to the music of Johannes Brahms, Joseph Joachim, Clara Schumann, Carl Reinecke, Niccolò Paganini, Felix Mendelssohn, Georges Enesco, Jean Françaix, and Darius Milhaud.
Pierre Lenert is the artistic director of the "Sérénade" International Chamber Music Festival and the "Le Goût de la Musique" Festival. He oversees the viola collection for the Artchipel Alto music editions and has published Niccolò Paganini’s Caprices as well as a specialized viola method for future generations with Billaudot.
From 1994 to 2022, he played the 1865 Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume viola, the “Comte Cheremetiev,” and he now performs on a 2018 viola by Philippe Mahu.
