A fellow traveller of George Balanchine and choreographer of West Side Story, Jerome Robbins is a major figure of American neo classicism. Three of his works in the Paris Opera Ballet repertoire highlight his inimitable blend of lightheartedness and wit. Set to the jazzy tones of Maurice Ravel, En Sol is a knowing nod to Broadway musicals in a sunny beach setting. In the lyrical setting of Chopin's Nocturnes, In the Night places classical technique at the service of a moving narrative. Three couples embody three moments of love: discovery, blossoming and turmoil, against the backdrop of a starry night. Subtitled 'The Perils of Everybody', The Concert features characters who appear to have escaped from a cartoon strip in a series of expressive and humorous sketches.

Hugo Marchand rehearses En Sol

6:50 min

The colors of music

By Antony Desvaux

For the Jerome Robbins show at the Opéra national de Paris, Hugo Marchand performs the ballet En Sol. The Étoile dancer discusses Erté's sunny beach decor and bathing costumes for this work, created in 1975 to Ravel's Concerto in G, and how he approaches the choreographer's language of virtuosity and entertainment.

Discussing his work in the rehearsal studio with Étoile dancer Hannah O'Neill, Hugo Marchand explains how Robbins' choreography, through its gesturality and sensuality, allows us to better hear the richness and colors of Ravel's music.

Robbins' variations on love: Ludmila Pagliero et Mathieu Ganio rehearse In the Night

By Antony Desvaux

For the Jerome Robbins show at the Opéra national de Paris, Ludmila Pagliero and Mathieu Ganio perform one of the three couples from the ballet In the Night. The two Étoiles talk about the scenario of this work, created in 1970 to Chopin's Nocturnes, and how they approach the choreographer's neo-classical style.

Often partners throughout their careers, Ludmila Pagliero and Mathieu Ganio talk about their complicity in their work, a complicity they play with to give substance to their love duet in In the Night.
