Richard Wagner - The Ring revolutions

As part of the new production of the Ring cycle at the Opéra Bastille and the RING Festival taking place in November 2026, the Paris Opera, in partnership with the Bibliothèque nationale de France, presents the exhibition Richard Wagner: The Ring revolutions.

Bringing together more than one hundred works and artefacts from the collections of the BnF, museums and cultural institutions, visual artists and private collections, the exhibition explores the genesis of this four-part cycle, the musical revolution brought about by Richard Wagner, the challenges of staging it, and its lasting influence on contemporary art. It offers a glimpse behind the scenes of this operatic universe, which has profoundly shaped the history of music and our understanding of opera as an art form.

The Ride of the Valkyries, Germanic and Norse gods, a dragon-slaying hero and a cursed ring: the Ring is undoubtedly Wagner’s work that has most deeply permeated the collective imagination.

First performed 150 years ago in Bayreuth and shaped by a succession of legendary productions, the Ring remains a unique theatrical and musical work, revolutionary and innovative in so many respects, that continues to fascinate audiences around the world.

From the genesis of Wagner’s project to its enduring legacy, the exhibition traces the journey of a work of universal scope whose interpretations are constantly being renewed. Throughout the exhibition, previously unseen works and interviews bear witness to the fascination that the Ring continues to exert on visual artists, choreographers, musicians and theatre practitioners.
