Jennifer Tipton Lighting designer

Biography

Born in Columbus, Ohio, and a graduate of Cornell University, Jennifer Tipton studied dance before becoming a lighting designer. She currently teaches stage lighting at the Yale University School of Drama. Having created the lighting for numerous theater, dance, and opera productions, she has received many awards, including two Bessies, the Laurence Olivier Award in London, the Dance Magazine Award, as well as an award from the City of New York.

In the field of opera, she has notably worked with Robert Wilson (Parsifal in Houston and Tannhäuser in Chicago) and more recently for the New York City Opera (Mourning Becomes Electra), the Santa Fe Opera (Agrippina, Beatrice and Benedict), and La Monnaie in Brussels (Don Giovanni). In the field of dance, she collaborates with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Jiří Kylián, Dana Reitz, Twyla Tharp, and, since 1967, has also worked with the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

She designs the lighting for all of Jerome Robbins’s productions and has collaborated since 2002 with Trisha Brown, for whom she notably created the lighting for O złożony / O composite (2004) at the Paris Opera.
