Le Rouge et le Noir

Palais Garnier - from 16 October to 04 November 2021

Synopsis

In the 1830s, during the period of the Restauration, Julien Sorel, an irresistible young 18-year‑old, experiences a meteoric rise. A protégé of the abbé Chélan, he gains access to the world of the aristocracy and finds himself at the very heart of the struggle for power. The Red and the Black is the story of a tumultuous life in which love proves to be the most dangerous of passions. Madame de Rênal and Mathilde de La Mole lead the protagonist through the twists and intrigues of a 19th century in which desire, politics and religion form the backdrop for a brilliant character study. In sumptuous sets and costumes which he himself has conceived, Pierre Lacotte, who reconstituted La Sylphide, Paquita and Coppélia, now offers us an entirely new creation based on Stendhal’s novel of the same name, accompanied by a musical anthology from Jules Massenet.

Le Rouge et le Noir, from sketches to costumes

By Antony Desvaux, Aliénor Courtin

For Le Rouge et le Noir, his latest ballet creation at the Paris Opera, Pierre Lacotte designed his own sumptuous costumes for the characters. Xavier Ronze, head of the couture department at the Palais Garnier, materialised the choreographer's desires, bringing his sketches to life. He looks back at the artistic choices that guided the work of the workshop and underlines the meaning of every detail. From the initial selection of materials and colours to the fittings with Étoile dancers Amandine Albisson and Mathieu Ganio, all the Opera's craftsmen's savoir-faire brings Stendhal's passionate story brilliantly to life on stage.

A Wonderful Adventure

By Aliénor de Foucaud

Choreographer, ballet master, former dancer with the Company and former pupil of the Ballet School, Pierre Lacotte returns to the Opera, his second home, to offer the Company a sumptuous creation inspired by Stendhal's novel, Le Rouge et le Noir. Using excerpts from the music of Jules Massenet, he translates into dance the story of Julien Sorel, a young man eager for social advancement, confronted with the power struggles of 19th century society. Pierre Lacotte, who also designed the sets and costumes for the ballet, looks back on this adventure in the setting of the Palais Garnier.
