The Trojan War is over. Idomeneo, the King of Crete, returns home after ten years of absence, but encounters a terrible storm on his way. To appease Neptune, he promises to sacrifice the first person he encounters on the shore, without realising that it will be… his own son!

It was to this libretto by Giambattista Varesco that Prince-Elector Karl-Theodor of Bavaria commissioned Mozart to write an opera seria for the Munich Carnival of 1781.

The composer poured all the exuberance of his 25 years into the work, magnifying the orchestra and chorus by drawing inspiration from the model of French lyric tragedy. The result is music alternately tender and grandiose, studded with dazzlingly beautiful arias.

After Œdipe in 2021 and Pelléas et Mélisande in 2025, Wajdi Mouawad returns to the Paris Opera to stage Idomeneo.

Les Grands Entretiens - Idomeneo

By Isabelle Stibbe

When an artist meets the General Director of the Paris Opera or its Director of Dance, what do they talk about? For the second season of the series Les Grands Entretiens, the Paris Opera reveals the behind-the-scenes process behind the artistic programming of the new productions for the 2026/27 season. Choice of guest artists, key themes, staging intentions, or choreographic styles: these exclusive conversations, lasting between fifteen and thirty minutes, offer the first keys to understanding the works soon to appear on the bill.

Mythology, the Trojan War, sacrifice, love, and the father-son relationship are some of the themes discussed in the context of the new production of Mozart’s Idomeneo, in a conversation between Alexander Neef, General Director of the Paris Opera, and stage director Wajdi Mouawad.

Mozart’s last opera, La Clemenza di Tito was composed for Emperor Leopold II’s coronation as King of Bohemia. If Antonio Salieri was initially asked to write the work, it would finally be the composer of Don Giovanni who would inherit the commission.

Written by Caterino Mazzolà, after Metastasio, the libretto was imposed on Mozart and set to music in record time – in under three weeks. It was an exhausting period for the composer because, in addition to this work and despite failing health, he was also working on the scores of The Magic Flute and the Requiem.
