Synopsis

Entitled “Pulsations”, this programme evokes both the rhythm of time and the beating heart, mirroring the repetitive music of Max Richter that permeates two pieces in the programme: the brand new creation by Lucinda Childs, icon of post-modern dance, for the Paris Opera Ballet, 42 years after Premier orage, and Schmetterling (2010) by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot.

In this expressive piece, making its repertoire debut, the butterfly symbolises existence’s transience and the eternal process of transformation following an opening scene that confronts a son with his mother’s death.

Equally poignant is Lamentation ( 1930), an iconic solo by modern dance pioneer Martha Graham. Seated on a bench, the dancer sculpts space, constrained by a long fabric tube, “a way of suggesting”, said the choreographer, “the tragedy that haunts the body”.

Les Grands Entretiens - Création (Pulsations)

By Isabelle Stibbe

When an artist meets the General Director of the Paris Opera or its Director of Dance, what do they talk about? For the second season of the series Les Grands Entretiens, the Paris Opera reveals the behind-the-scenes process behind the artistic programming of the new productions for the 2026/27 season. Choice of guest artists, key themes, staging intentions, or choreographic styles: these exclusive conversations, lasting between fifteen and thirty minutes, offer the first keys to understanding the works soon to appear on the bill.

On the occasion of her creation for the Paris Opera Ballet, choreographer Lucinda Childs speaks with José Martinez, Director of Dance, about Max Richter’s music, which inspires her new piece, as well as her artistic collaboration with video artist Étienne Guiol.
