French lighting designer David Debrinay initially studied history before turning to the performing arts, where he began his career as a lighting assistant. He later became a lighting designer and, for more than twenty years, has maintained an active practice in both theatre and dance. He has collaborated in particular with Laurent Brethome, Bruno Bouché, Thierry Jolivet, Alejandro Cerrudo, Jean-Claude Berruti, Yan Raballand, Johanny Bert, Davy Brun, and Jonah Bokaer. Alongside his stage work, he has also been involved in exhibition design, creating lighting installations for several major exhibitions, notably at the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée des Armées, and as part of the Venice Architecture Biennale.
He entered the world of opera in 2006 with a staged reading conceived by Richard Brunel around 20th-century opera composers, presented at the Festival de la Correspondance in Grignan. From that time onward, he expanded his collaborations with directors and artists such as Lucinda Childs, Richard Brunel, Max-Emanuel Cencic, Nicola Raab, Gilles Rico, and Jakob Peter-Messer.
His work has been presented in numerous opera houses, including the Opéra de Lyon, the Opéra Royal de Versailles, the Opéra de Lausanne, the Opéra de Valence, the Opéra de Nice, the Wiesbaden Staatstheater, the Greek National Opera, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
Since 2020, he has been an associate artist of the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival. In 2018, he founded LJOMA, a studio dedicated to lighting design, where he serves as artistic director. At the Opéra national du Rhin, he notably designed the lighting for Farnace (2012), Doctor Atomic (2014) in a production directed by Lucinda Childs, and the ballet Wings of Desire, choreographed by Bruno Bouché (2021).
