Born in Kroonstad, South Africa, Levy Sekgapane studied with Kamal Khan and Hanna van Niekerk at the University of Cape Town's South African College of Music. He has sung Count Almaviva (The Barber of Seville) at the Glyndebourne Festival, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera and the Opéra National de Bordeaux, and Don Ramiro (La Cenerentola) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Hamburg State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Los Angeles Opera, the Lyric Opera Boston and the Zurich Opera, where he sang with Cecilia Bartoli.
He also made his debut as Nadir (Les Pêcheurs de perles) in Cape Town, Ernesto (Don Pasquale) in Vienna and Bari, Rodrigo (Otello) in Frankfurt, Elvino (La Somnambule) in Munich and Arbace (Idomeneo) in Salzburg, Idreno (Semiramis) in Berlin, Arturo (Les Puritains) and Belmonte (L'Enlèvement au sérail) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Jonas (Die Zeit unseres Singens) in Brussels and the title role of Mitridate in Montpellier.
In concert, he has performed with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra, the Spanish National Orchestra and the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, to name but a few. Levy Sekgapane won first prize in the Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition (2015), the Monserrat Caballé Singing Competition (2015) and the Operalia Plácido Domingo Competition (2017).
