Biography

Bettina Auer was born in Heidelberg and lives in Berlin. She studied music theater direction, musicology and German philology in Hamburg and Berlin. In addition to her work as an expert and dramaturge for musical drama at theaters in Berne, Darmstadt and Basel, and at Berlin's Komische Oper, she has supervised productions and projects in the fields of drama and dance, developing numerous creations.

As a freelance dramaturge and consultant, she has worked for the Salzburg Festival, Opernhaus Zurich, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Radialsystem and Philharmonie Berlin, Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Israel Festival, Lucerne Festival, Theater Cologne, Vlaamse Opera Antwerp, National Opera Amsterdam, Teatro Argentino, Teatro Arriaga Bilbao, Teatro Canal Madrid, Nationaltheatret and Nørske Operaen Oslo, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Residenztheater and Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Staatsoper Hamburg, Staatsoper Vienna, Burgtheater, Theater an der Wien, Grand Théâtre Genève and Opéra national de Paris. Since 2009, she has collaborated continuously with Calixto Bieito.

She has also worked with Stefan Bachmann, Karin Beier, Tatjana Gürbaca, Claus Guth, Jasmina Hadziahmetovič, Barbora Horáková Joly, Barrie Kosky, Hans Neuenfels, Stefan Pucher, Nicolas Stemann and Michael Thalheimer. Bettina Auer has been invited to lecture at various universities in Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden. For many years, she has taught at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin (directing and dramaturgy classes), where she was recently appointed honorary professor.
