Synopsis

Forget thatched roofs, forests filled with Willis and white tutus! Johan Inger’s Giselle, which returns to the Palais Garnier three years after IMPASSE entered the repertoire, is inspired by the famous romantic ballet but revisits it in a more contemporary dramaturgy.

Whilst in Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot’s original version, Giselle was a peasant girl and Bathilde a princess, here the two women, both in love with Albrecht, are a free spirit and a lucid observer. Yet they are confronted with the same turmoil, including jealousy and revenge.

Set to a new musical composition by Grégoire Hetzel, the Swedish choreographer evokes maternal love, friendship and passion throughout the two acts. Emphasising feminine strength, desire and loss, he shows two sides of love: its beauty and its destructive power.

Les Grands Entretiens - Giselle

By Isabelle Stibbe

When an artist meets the General Director of the Paris Opera or its Director of Dance, what do they talk about? For the second season of the series Les Grands Entretiens, the Paris Opera reveals the behind-the-scenes process behind the artistic programming of the new productions for the 2026/27 season. Choice of guest artists, key themes, staging intentions, or choreographic styles: these exclusive conversations, lasting between fifteen and thirty minutes, offer the first keys to understanding the works soon to appear on the bill.

What inspires a choreographer to present a new version of a classical ballet? On the occasion of his new creation, Giselle, Johan Inger speaks with José Martinez, Director of Dance at the Paris Opera, about his artistic choices.
