After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, William Orlandi (1952–2024) created numerous sets and costumes for both Italian and international opera stages. He worked with Peter Ustinov (Renard, The Flood, Káťa Kabanová) and designed the sets and costumes for Il Trovatore and Werther at the New National Theatre Tokyo, as well as La Bohème in Bologna.
He collaborated for the first time with Gilbert Deflo for the premiere of Liebermann’s La Forêt in Geneva. Many joint productions followed, including Aida, Falstaff, Otello, Roland, Xerxes, Semiramide, The Queen of Spades, Orfeo, Tosca, Carmen, Faust, Falstaff, Otello, Don Giovanni, La clemenza di Tito, Così fan tutte, Cavalleria rusticana, Thérèse, Rigoletto, La Gioconda, Lucia di Lammermoor, Manon Lescaut, and Il Trovatore. He also worked with Giancarlo Del Monaco (Lohengrin, Otello, The Flying Dutchman, L’Italiana in Algeri, Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, Luisa Miller, Madama Butterfly) and Lorenzo Mariani (Il Trovatore, Aida, The Barber of Seville, La Bohème).
