Canadian-Armenian bass-baritone Vartan Gabrielian was a finalist at the Belvedere Competition in 2022 as well as a semi-finalist of the 2023 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. He is also a recipient of awards from numerous organizations including the Metropolitan Opera National Council, Sylva Gelber Foundation, Career Bridges Schuyler Foundation, Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation, Gerda Lissner Foundation, and the George London Foundation.
Vartan Gabrielian holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the Curtis Institute of Music. He is also an alumnus of the Canadian Opera Company’s ensemble and the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice program.
Highlights from last year’s season include the roles of Masetto and Commendatore (Don Giovanni) at the National Arts Centre, and Nourabad (Les pêcheurs de perles) at the Vancouver Opera. He also returned to the Canadian Opera Company to perform Dottore (Macbeth) and cover Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), and Banquo (Macbeth).
For the 2023/24 season, he sings the roles of Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) at the Verbier Festival, Basilio (The Barber of Seville), Brother Laurent (Romeo and Juliet), and Capitán (Florencia en el Amazonas) at Opera San Jose, Fasolt (Das Rheingold) at the Edmonton Opera and Basilio with the Des Moines Metro Opera. He is also a soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
