Biography

Through his uniquely compelling performances with leading opera houses and orchestras around the world, Rolando Villazón has established himself as one of the most highly acclaimed tenors of his generation and a highly versatile artist, pursuing successful careers as a stage director, novelist and television personality as well as his career as an opera singer. His voice and stage presence have been acclaimed by the critics: “his artistry as astonishing as ever, fusing sound, sense and gesture in an uncompromising quest for veracity” (The Guardian).

Rolando Villazón is a regular guest at major international opera houses such as the Berlin, Munich and Vienna Staatsoper, La Scala Milan, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and at the Salzburg Festival. At the Paris Opera, he has performed in Faust, La Traviata, The Tales of Hoffmann and Werther. He performs regularly with important conductors – Daniel Barenboim and Yannick Nézet-Séguin for example – in opera houses throughout the world, notably in Salzburg, London, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Baden-Baden, Leipzig, the Academy of Saint Cecilia in Rome and Carnegie Hall in New York.

He made his debut as a stage director at Lyon Opera in 2010 and has since directed productions for the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and the Vienna Volksoper. An exclusive recording artist with Deutsche Grammophon since 2007, Rolando Villazón has recorded more than twenty CDs and DVDs that have received awards. He has also been named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, acts as ambassador for the Red Noses Clown Doctors International Charity and is a member of the Collège de Pataphysique in Paris. His first novel, Malabares, was published in Spanish, French and Geman.
