Biography

After graduating Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki Niina Keitel started her career in Staatstheater Darmstadt. In Darmstadt she sang a wide repertoire of roles including Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) and Magdalene (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). She then joined the ensemble of Nationaltheater Mannheim in 2010 for one season before joining the ensemble in Finnish National Opera in her native Finland in 2011.
In Mannheim she performed such roles as Olga (Eugene Onegin) and Lola (Cavalleria Rusticana), and in Helsinki she was celebrated as Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Carmen (Carmen), Judit (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle) and Marina (Boris Godunov).
Since 2014 she has been a freelancer and is a widely sought-after singer of opera, concert and lied alike.

Guest performances have led her to: Oper Frankfurt, Savonlinna Opera Festival, Daegu International Opera Festival, Luzerner Theater, Theater Heidelberg and Münchener Biennale.

As a versatile concert singer Ms. Keitel has performed with many symphony orchestras in Finland, Sweden, Germany and France and has worked with many successful conductors, including Kent Nagano, Dan Ettinger, Leif Segerstam and Mikko Franck. Her recent concert highlights include alto soloist in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in the Colmar Les Musicales Festival and Beethoven 9. in Göteborg with Kent Nagano. She has also been seen and heard in many world premieres of both orchestral and operatic works. Lied-recitals take her all around the world, for example concert tour in Japan in summer 2015.

In addition to her career as an opera and concert singer, Niina Keitel is the Artistic Director of the Lemi Music Festival in Finland.
