Born in Paris in 1791, Louis-Joseph-Ferdinand Hérold studied music theory with François-Joseph Fétis. He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1806, where he studied violin with Rodolphe Kreutzer and composition with Nicolas Étienne Méhul. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1812, he moved to Naples in 1815. Joachim Murat hired him to teach piano to his daughters. He was hired by the Royal Academy of Music and made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1828.
He enjoyed success with the comic operas La Clochette (1817), Les Rosiers (1817), Zampa (1831) and Le Pré-aux-clercs (1832). Author of ballets for Jean-Pierre Aumer, such as Astolphe et Joconde (1827), La Somnambule (1827), La Belle au bois dormant (1829) and La Noce de village (1830), he also wrote the score for this choreographer for La Fille mal gardée, a ballet originally created by Jean Dauberval. Louis-Joseph-Ferdinand Hérold died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1833.
