James Farncombe designs lighting for opera, theatre, and dance. He has notably worked on The Makropulos Affair and Innocence at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, in Helsinki, at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, and at the San Francisco Opera; Jenůfa at the Lyric Opera of Chicago; Lessons in Love and Violence at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the Opéra National de Lyon, and the Hamburg State Opera; Theodora at the Royal Ballet and Opera; Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Los Angeles Opera; Pelléas et Mélisande and Alcina at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow; Tristan und Isolde, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Trauernacht at the Aix-en-Provence Festival; La Traviata at the Vienna State Opera; Francesca da Rimini at the Opéra national du Rhin; Miranda at the Opéra Comique; The Barber of Seville at the Glyndebourne Festival; The Marriage of Figaro at Opera North; Pelléas et Mélisande at Den Norske Opera; The Flying Dutchman and Ariodante at Scottish Opera; and Benjamin, dernière nuit at the Opéra National de Lyon.
In theatre, his recent engagements include Dangerous Liaisons, The Land of the Living, The Other Place, Phaedra, Vanya, Care, Yerma, Under the Shadow, Richard II, and Anatomy of a Suicide.
