Fabio Barettin Lighting designer

Biography

Born in Venice in 1961, Fabio Barettin studied electrical engineering before joining the technical team at La Fenice, where he has worked with renowned directors since 1992. He has designed the lighting for numerous operas and ballets in Venetian theaters such as Palafenice, Teatro Malibran, Teatro Goldoni and La Fenice. He has also collaborated with the Royal Opera House in London and Rai Radiotelevisione Italiana. His work has taken him to the most important international stages: Teatro Sociale in Rovigo, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Teatro Carignano in Turin, Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, Teatro Comunale in Bolzano, La Scala in Milan, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, as well as Teatro Greco in Barcelona, Théâtre National in Havana, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo, Poly Theatre in Beijing, Opéra de Marseille and Grand Théâtre de Genève. He has worked with directors such as Roberto de Simone, Maurizio Scaparro, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Michele Placido, Ermanno Olmi, Jurgen Flimm, Paul Curran, Damiano Michieletto and Francesco Micheli.

He created the lighting for Alice in Wonderland, Ariadne auf Naxos, Le Barbier de Séville, Le Chevalier à la rose, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Les Noces de Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, Falstaff, La Pie voleuse, L'Italienne à Alger, Il Killer di Parole by Venetian composer Claudio Ambrosini, Madame Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Orphée et Eurydice, Otello, Parsifal, Roméo et Juliette, La Scala di seta, Casse-Noisette, Simon Boccanegra, La Traviata, Werther, Un bal masqué, Lucia di Lammermoor, Bajazet.

Since March 2010, he has been teaching lighting technique and design at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts. During the 2024-2025 season, he will be designing the lighting for La Voix humaine in Rovigo, Il Nome della Rosa in Milan and Il re pastore in Rome, among others.
