Born in Montevideo, Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott began his operatic career at a very young age in the role of Roucher (Andrea Chénier). He won first prize at the Plácido Domingo Operalia competition in 1998. Since then, he has appeared on major international opera stages, in roles such as Leporello and the title role in Don Giovanni, Pagano (I Lombardi alla prima crociata), Banquo (Macbeth), Escamillo (Carmen), the title roles in Attila and Boito’s Mefistofele, Méphistophélès (Gounod’s Faust and Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust) and Dulcamara (L’Elisir d’amore).
During the 2025–2026 season, he performs, among other roles, Basilio (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) in Vienna, Ramfis (Aida) in Monte Carlo, Dulcamara in Hamburg, Oroveso (Norma) in Berlin and Munich, and Alidoro (La Cenerentola) in Munich. He has recorded two albums for Sony Classical: Arias and Rojotango—the latter awarded the ECHO Classic Award in 2012. Erwin Schrott is also committed to various charitable organizations that provide help and support to children in need.
