Born in Montevideo, Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott began his operatic career at a very young age in the role of Roucher (Andrea Chénier). He won First Prize at the Operalia Plácido Domingo Competition in 1998.
He has since appeared on the world’s leading opera stages in roles such as Leporello and the title role in Don Giovanni, Pagano (I Lombardi alla prima crociata), Banquo (Macbeth), Escamillo (Carmen), the title roles in Attila and Boito’s Mefistofele, Méphistophélès (Faust by Gounod and The Damnation of Faust by Berlioz), and Dulcamara (The Elixir of Love).
During the 2025–2026 season, he will notably appear as Basilio (The Barber of Seville) in Vienna, Ramfis (Aida) in Monte Carlo, Dulcamara in Hamburg, Oroveso (Norma) in Berlin and Munich, and Alidoro (La Cenerentola) in Munich.
He has recorded two albums for Sony Classical, Arias and Rojotango—the latter awarded the ECHO Klassik Award in 2012. Erwin Schrott is also involved in various charitable organizations providing aid and support to children in need.
