Édouard Lalo Composer

Biography

Édouard-Victoire-Antoine Lalo was born on January 27, 1823, in Lille, into a family of Spanish origin long established in northern France. Drawn to music from an early age, he began his training at the Lille Conservatory, where he studied the violin before deciding, as a teenager, to move to Paris to deepen his musical knowledge. In Paris, he attended the Conservatory and took violin lessons — notably with François-Antoine Habeneck — while furthering his studies in composition with teachers such as Julius Schulhoff. To support himself, he gave lessons and performed as an instrumentalist. In 1848, he published his first songs, and in 1855 he founded the Armingaud Quartet with friends, first playing the viola and later the second violin.

During an initial period, he devoted himself mainly to chamber music and songs. After his marriage in 1865 to the contralto Julie Besnier de Maligny, he composed several songs for his wife. In 1872–1873, Lalo wrote orchestral works such as his Divertissement, followed by a Violin Concerto dedicated to the virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. It was, however, his Symphonie espagnole (1875) that brought him widespread recognition. The same decade saw the publication of a Cello Concerto (1876), a Rapsodie norvégienne (1879), and a Concerto russe (1879), demonstrating Lalo’s interest in folkloric colors and expressive orchestral writing.

In 1882, he composed the ballet Namouna for the Paris Opera, which drew admiration from composers such as Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy. His most famous operatic work remains Le Roi d’Ys, an opera inspired by a Breton legend whose premiere at the Opéra-Comique in 1888 was a tremendous success. In the final years of his life, Lalo continued his musical explorations by writing a Piano Concerto, while leaving some works unfinished. He died in Paris on April 22, 1892, at the age of 69, and was buried in the Père-Lachaise Cemetery.
