Clive Bayley Bass

Biography

Born in Manchester, Clive Bayley performs on the greatest opera stages in a varied repertoire including works by Monteverdi, Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Berg, Britten, Birtwistle, Wagner and Ligeti.

In 2014, he made his debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera as the Doctor (Wozzeck). He sings Astradamos (Le Grand Macabre) in San Francisco, the title role in Don Quixote and Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin) at Grange Park Opera, Sir Walter Raleigh (Gloriana) in Hamburg and London. His repertoire also includes the roles of Kecal (La Fiancée vendue), Bluebeard (Bluebeard's Castle), Roco (Fidelio), King Marke (Tristan and Isolde)... At Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper, he sings Arkel (Pelléas et Mélisande), Titurel (Parsifal), Sylvano (La Calisto), Géronte (Manon Lescaut), Achille (Giulio Cesare). At the Opéra national du Rhin, he sings Fasolt (L'Or du Rhin), directed by David McVicar. He sang Claggart (Billy Budd) in Frankfurt, directed by Richard Jones. In 2021, he appeared at Madrid's Teatro Real (Peter Grimes) and Grange Park Opera (Les Voyages de Monsieur Broucek, Ivan the Terrible).

He recorded the Ring as Fafner and Hunding, conducted by Sir Mark Elder. His discography also includes Candide with Leonard Bernstein and recordings with Les Arts Florissants. In the 2023-2024 season, he will perform the roles of Swallow (Peter Grimes) at English National Opera and Ivan Fyodorovich Yepanchin (The Idiot) at the Salzburg Festival.
