Charles Edwards Set designer

Biography

Born in Newcastle, Charles Edwards studied at the London Central School of Art and Design. Recent projects as a set designer include Tristan und Isolde at Grange Park Opera, Il Trittico at the Scottish Opera, Asrael (Franchetti) at the Bonn Theatre, and Fedora at the New York Metropolitan Opera.

He also designed the sets for Adriana Lecouvreur, Werther and Faust at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, A Midsummer Night’s dream, Lucia di Lammermoor, Jenůfa, The Makropulos Case and Kátia Kabanová for the English National Opera, Gianni Schicchi, Il Trovatore, Radamisto, Norma and Tosca at Opera North, I masnadieri and La Calisto at Teatro alla Scala, Milan, Don Carlos at the Metropolitan Opera, Il Trovatore, Billy Budd, Wozzeck and The Makropulos Case at the Chicago Lyric Opera, Kátia Kabanová and Wozzeck in Dallas, Macbeth and Jenůfa in Houston, Tamerlano at Komische Oper Berlin, Die tote Stadt in Strasburg, La gazza ladra in Frankfurt and Samson et Dalila in Darmstadt.

As a director, he has staged, among other operas, Joshua, Rigoletto and Œdipus rex at Opera North, Tristan und Isolde, Don Quixote and Idoménée at Grange Park Opera, Turandot at Nationale Reisopera, Maria di Rohan for the Wexford Festival, Elektra at the Royal Opera House and Tristan und Isolde at Teatro São Carlos, Lisbon.
