Brigitte Lefèvre Dance director

Biography

Brigitte Lefèvre entered the Paris Opera Ballet School at the age of eight, before joining the Paris Opera Ballet company, which she left ten years later to found, together with Jacques Garnier, the Théâtre du Silence. This was one of the first dance companies to be established outside Paris, with the aim of making choreographic art more accessible.

During this period (1972–1985), she directed, danced in, and choreographed numerous works for the company, which was based in La Rochelle thanks to the support of Mayor Michel Crépeau and the Ministry of Culture.

This adventure enabled the company to reach a wide audience, both locally and internationally, on some of the world’s most prestigious stages.

She later decided to bring this chapter to a close and was called to the Ministry of Culture, where she became France’s first National Delegate for Dance when the position was created.

In 1992, she was appointed General Administrator of the Opéra Garnier and, in 1995, became Director of Dance, a role she held until her departure on November 1, 2014.

She choreographed La Révolution Française, the first rock opera by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil.

Her deep interest in theatre led her to perform at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, where she played the role of Lisa in Dostoevsky’s The Possessed, adapted by Albert Camus and directed by Jean Mercure.

She also produced and hosted the France Culture radio program À quoi pensez-vous.
