Alexander Köpeczi Bass

Biography

Winner of the Herbert von Karajan Prize, Hungarian-Romanian bass Alexander Köpeczi began his musical training in Cluj, Romania, as a pianist and accompanist.

He then studied singing and made his professional stage debut in 2014. Winner of the 57th Francisco Viñas Singing Competition in Barcelona, he was invited to take part in the Salzburg Festival's Young Artists Project in summer 2021. He made his debut at London's Royal Opera House in 2022 and was a member of the ensemble at Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper from 2022 to 2024, performing roles such as the Monk (Don Carlo), Tom (A Masked Ball), Ramfis (Aida) and Zuniga (Carmen). Recent appearances include Alvise (La Gioconda) at Naples' Teatro di San Carlo, Sparafucile (Rigoletto) with London's Royal Opera House on tour in Japan, and Ramfis at Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper.

He made his debut at Berlin's Komische Oper as Sarastro (The Magic Flute), and at the Salzburg Festival as Reinmar von Zweter (Tannhäuser). He sang Colline (La Bohème), the Monk, the Sacristan (Tosca), Lodovico (Otello) and Leone (Attila) in London, and Sarastro in Gstaad and La Côte-Saint-André. He took part in the world premiere of Jenő Hubay's Luthier de Cremona.

Last season, he made his debuts at New York's Metropolitan Opera and Dresden's Semperoper as Colline, at the Amsterdam National Opera as Sparafucile, and at Atlanta Opera as Fafner (Siegfried). Other highlights include Ramfis at London's Royal Opera House, the King (Aida) at Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper, and a triple appearance at Erl's Tiroler Festspiele as Sparafucile, Ferrando (Le Trouvère) and Doctor Grenvil (La Traviata). In the 2025-2026 season, he plays Colline and Sarastro in New York, Sparafucile in London, Ferrando in Munich, Banco (Macbeth) in Copenhagen, Alvise in Barcelona, Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Naples and Sarastro and Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin) in Santa Fe.
