Shakespeare, fragments nocturnes

Amphithéâtre Olivier Messiaen - from 09 to 17 October 2018

Synopsis

Shakespeare bequeathed

the world a legacy of theatre characters who have since become legends.

Numerous composers—Purcell, Bellini, Rossini, Thomas and Britten—have lent life

to these tormented figures on the opera stage. Maëlle Dequiedt has gathered

together some of the most intense scenes of the repertoire around one of the

English playwright’s greatest obsessions: night. Ophelia’s night of feverish

sleeplessness, Juliet’s night of waiting, Desdemona’s night of dread, and a

phantasmagorical night in A Midsummer Night’s Dream... The characters

cross paths without ever meeting. All that remains of these nights is the

desire to be and to love.
