Synopsis
In the more intimate setting of the Amphithéâtre Bastille, the musicians of the Paris Opera Orchestra welcome you for a programme of chamber music.
The works featured in this concert create an imaginary transatlantic journey: two are French, two American. All four pieces date from the mid-1930s, contemporaneous with the heyday of the famous ocean liner Normandie, which entered service in 1935 and brought France unmatched prestige—at least until its English rival, the Queen Mary, sought to claim the spotlight.
Beyond this nautical reference, the two American composers, Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland, studied with Nadia Boulanger at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau. As for Darius Milhaud, he served in 1917 and 1918 as secretary to Paul Claudel, who had been appointed France’s ambassador to Brazil. For Milhaud, the spirit of travel is a founding influence.

In both our venues, discounted tickets are sold at the box offices from 30 minutes before the show:
- €10 tickets for under-28s, unemployed people (with documentary proof less than 3 months old) and senior citizens over 65 with non-taxable income (proof of tax exemption for the current year required)
- €15 tickets for senior citizens over 65
