The Paris Opera Ballet Promotional Competition, whose conditions and organization are defined in the Paris Opera Collective Agreement (Article 9 of Title IV of the "Artistic Staff" Annex) will be held on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 November 2023 on the stage of the Palais Garnier.

The openings that may be filled are the following:

  • 3 positions for female Sujets
  • 4 positions for male Sujets
  • 5 positions for female Coryphées
  • 6 positions for male Coryphées

The female Quadrilles will open the competition on 9 November, followed by the female Coryphées the same day. The male Quadrilles will open the trials on 10 November, followed by the male Coryphées the same day.

Each candidate is required to perform in front of the Jury an imposed variation and a variation of their choice, which can be selected in the Paris Opera’s ballet repertoire.

Trials for Premier Dancers, male and female, will not be open in this year’s competition.

The internal promotion from the Sujets to the Premier Dancers will be carried out by appointment of the Paris Opera Director on the proposal of the Dance Director until the end of the 2023/2024 season.
This decision has been taken following discussions with dancers, management and the unions, and resulted in the signing of an agreement temporarily derogating from the Collective Agreement.

It has been taken as part of an experiment organized to try, for a year, a new form of internal promotion of the Sujets.
A decision will be taken at the end of the 2023/24 season on whether to keep this experiment permanent or not.

The terms and conditions for the other classes remain unchanged.
The Paris Opera would like to remind that the Palais Garnier will be exceptionally closed to visitors during these two days.
