Wayne McGregor Choreographer

Biography

Wayne McGregor is a stage director and choreographer, and the artistic director of The Studio Wayne McGregor, a creative studio mixing dance, cinema, music, visual arts and technologies, and the Company Wayne McGregor, founded in 1992. Within 15 years, he choreographed more than 30 works for his company, the most recent being Autobiography (2017), +/- Human (2017), Atomos (2013), UNDANCE (2011) and FAR (2010).

Wayne McGregor is also the first Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet coming from contemporary dance. He is Professor of Choreography at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and holds an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Plymouth University and an Honorary Doctor of Letters from University of Leeds.

He is regularly invited to create ballets for world-wide known companies; he thus collaborated with the Paris Opera Ballet, the New York City Ballet, the Ballet of the Bolshoi Theatre, the Bayerisches Staatsballet (Munich), the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the American Ballet Theatre, The Royal Danish Ballet, the Australian Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet.

He also realised some choreographies for movies like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Tarzan, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (1 and 2), Mary Queen of Scots. He also works for the opera or on theatre projects, clips (Radiohead), fashion shows, television and specific events like Big Dance Trafalgar Square (2012).

Recently he created Yugen, Multiverse, Obsidian Tear and Woolf Works for The Royal Ballet, Sunyata for the Bayerisches Staatsballet, and AfteRite for the ABT.

Wayne McGregor won two Olivier Awards, the Prix Benois de la Danse. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2011.

He created several works for the Paris Opera: Genus (2017), L’Anatomie de la sensation (2011), Alea Sands (2015), Tree of Codes (for the Paris Opera Ballet and the Company Wayne McGregor - 2015).
