Simon Stone is an Australian playwright and director of theater, opera, and film whose contemporary adaptations explore timeless human dilemmas. He founded the theater company The Hayloft Project in 2007. His adaptation of Ibsen’s The Wild Duck won the Helpmann Award for Best Play. Since then, Simon Stone has collaborated with leading theater and opera companies in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Australasia.
Among her most notable works are *Yerma* (Young Vic, London; Park Avenue Armory, New York), winner of the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Revival, *Phaedra* (National Theatre, London, 2023), and *Medea* (ITA Amsterdam; BAM, New York, 2020). His reinterpretation of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard (LGA Arts Center, Seoul, 2024) toured Hong Kong, Singapore, and Adelaide. Her operas include Innocence (Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, 2021), winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Opera in 2024 following its run at the Royal Ballet and Opera.
It toured the world and premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2026. Simon Stone made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York with Lucia di Lammermoor. His feature films include The Woman in Cabin 10 (Netflix, 2025), The Daughter (2015), and The Dig (Netflix, 2021).
