Biography

As the winner of the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, Shenyang came to international attention and quickly made his debut on leading stages, including the New York Metropolitan Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Opernhaus Zürich and Washington National Opera.

While his early career focused principally on the operas of Rossini, Mozart and Handel, recent seasons have seen a shift to a more dramatic repertoire. He thus made his role debuts as Don Pizarro (Fidelio) with Los Angeles Philharmonic, Jochanaan (Salome) with Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gunther (Götterdämmerung) with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Klingsor (Parsifal) at La Monnaie in Brussels.

Shenyang has always been a constant concert singer. Highlights of the recent years include Beethoven’s Symphony n°9, with Philadelphia Orchestra and New York Philharmonic, and Mahler’s Symphony n°8 with Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest.

In the 2022/23 season, Shenyang joined the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra to sing Kurwenal and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich for Don Pizarro. A strong champion of the vocal treasures of his homeland, Shenyang created the title role in Tan Dun’s Buddha Passion at Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

He performed and recorded Xiaogang Ye’s orchestral song cycle The Song of the Earth. A recipient of the Alice Tully Vocal Arts Award for his commitment to Lieder, Shenyang recently presented his new programme Variations of Jade – The Journey of Tang Poetry at the Wigmore Hall, as well as in Beijing and Macau. He can be heard on A Lost World, an album featuring various lieders of Schubert.
