Biography

Born in Mexico City, Ramon Vargas won the Enrico Caruso Competition in Italy and then joined the company of the Lucerne Opera, where he sang the title role of Werther and Elvino in La Sonnambula. His international career developed rapidly and he performed at the Vienna Staatsoper (die Zauberflöte, Maria Stuarda, Falstaff) the Rome Opera (Il barbiere di Siviglia), the Zurich Opera (Fra Diavolo), the Teatro Comunale of Bologna (Mosè in Egitto) and the Marseille Opera (Lucia di Lammermoor) ... He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1992 in Lucia di Lammermoor, at la Scala Milan the following year in Falstaff, at the Paris Opera, the Chicago Opera and the Arena di Verona in Rigoletto, at Covent Garden, Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper and the Hamburg Staatsoper in La Traviata, at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in La Favorite, at the San Francisco Opera in Un ballo in maschera, at the Washington Opera in Don Carlo and at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in La Bohème. He took on the roles of Faust, Hoffmann and Romeo (Roméo et Juliette) at the Houston Opera, the title role of Idomeneo at the Salzburg Festival 2006, Rodolfo in Luisa Miller at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. He has sung Lenski in Eugene Onegin, the title role of Don Carlo, Des Grieux in Manon, the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, L'Elisir d'amore, Werther, Gabriele Adorno in Simon Boccanegra, Les Contes d'Hoffmann at the Staatsoper Vienna (where he was appointed Kammersänger in 2008), Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at Covent Garden in London, Nemorino in L'Elisir d'amore, Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera, Faust in Boito's Mefistofele in San Francisco, the title role of Ernani in Monte-Carlo, Rodolfo in La Bohème, L'Elisir d'amore, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Don Giovanni and La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera of New York, Simon Boccanegra, Les Contes d'Hoffmann and La Bohème at La Scala in Milan, Un ballo in maschera at the Chorégies d'Orange, the title role in Idomeneo at the Budapest Festival, Tito in La Clemenza di Tito in Zurich ... At the Paris Opera he has performed in Rigoletto, La Traviata, Der Rosenkavalier, Idomeneo, Luisa Miller, Un ballo in maschera.
