Born in 1952, Philippe Fénelon is a French composer. After studying at the École des Langues Orientales (Bulgarian, comparative literature, linguistics), he won the composition prize in Olivier Messiaen’s class at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. His music engages in a continual dialogue with the history of arts and literature. Revisiting genres inherited from the past (madrigal, concerto, string quartet), his catalogue includes more than a hundred works.
The creation of eight operas highlights the central role of lyric art in his work. From Le Chevalier imaginaire (Théâtre du Châtelet, 1992), Les Rois (Bordeaux, 2004), Faust (Toulouse, 2007), to JJR, citoyen de Genève (commissioned by the city of Geneva to celebrate the tricentenary of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 2012) and Flaubert & Voltaire (Peralada, 2014), Philippe Fénelon constructs vast and moving sonic dramaturgies. He has also directed several documentary films and is the author of various publications, including Histoires d’opéras (Actes Sud, 2007) and Déchiffrages, Une vie en musiques (Riveneuve, 2017).
At the Paris Opera: Salammbô (1998, 2000); Yamm (2000); Judith (2007); Faust (2010); La Cerisaie (2012).
