Philip Feeney Composer

Biography

Born in 1954, Philip Feeney studied composition at the University of Cambridge with Robin Holloway and Hugh Wood, and later at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome under Franco Donatoni. After working as a pianist and composer for the Teatrodanza di Roma from 1980 to 1984, he returned to London, where he served as composer-in-residence and musical director for Ballet Central. From 1991 to 1995, he taught composition at the University of Reading.

As a pianist, Philip Feeney has collaborated with numerous companies, including the Northern Ballet Theatre, the Gulbenkian Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Rambert Dance Company, Carlos Acosta, Adventures in Motion Pictures, the White Oak Project, and the Martha Graham Company. In addition to the more than forty scores he composed for Ballet Central, he has worked with many choreographers, including William Louther, Jane Dudley, Christopher Gable, Michael Pink, Didy Veldman, Michael Keegan-Dolan, Derek Williams, David Nixon, Adam Cooper, and Sara Matthews.

His notable compositions include the music for Mémoire Imaginaire for Michael Pink, Jazz Concerto for Derek Williams, Cinderella for Christopher Gable, The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Michael Pink (1997), Greymatter and A Streetcar Named Desire for Didy Veldman, The Flowerbed and Giselle for Michael Keegan-Dolan, Les Liaisons dangereuses for Adam Cooper, and Mirror Mirror, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Beauty and the Beast for Michael Pink. Since 2016, he has collaborated with choreographer Cathy Marston on Jane Eyre, The Suit, Lady Chatterley's Lover, The Cellist, and Victoria.
