Monica Bacelli Mezzo-soprano

Biography

A graduate of the Conservatory of Pescara, Monica Bacelli won the Belli competition in Spoleto, where she made her debut as Cherubino (The Marriage of Figaro) and Dorabella (Così fan tutte). She performs regularly in the world's leading opera houses and concert halls, including La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, the San Francisco Opera, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, under conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Antonio Pappano and Simon Rattle. In the contemporary repertoire, she has premiered Marco Tutino's Le Bel Indifférent and Ivan Fedele's Antigone at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Her close collaboration with Luciano Berio has enabled her to perform roles written for her in Outis, Cronaca del luogo and Altra voce in Salzburg, New York, Tokyo, Paris and Rome. She has also sung Berio's Folksongs with, among others, the Berliner Philharmoniker. During the 2025-2026 season, she will perform the roles of Háta (The Bartered Bride) in Madrid and Madamigella Dangeville (Adriana Lecouvreur) in Naples. She received the Abbiati Prize in 1995-1996.
