Biography

British artist Matthew Richardson has worked on the lighting of many operatic and theatre productions, in Great Britain and abroad, including, for the opera: Alcina (Opera North and Seattle Opera), Greek (Scottish Opera and Hanover Opera), Das Rheingold (Birmingham Opera Company), Le Nozze di Figaro, Fidelio, From the House of the Dead, Pelléas et Mélisande (English National Opera), Otello, Macbeth (Teatro alla Scala, Milan), Eugen Onegin, Lulu (Glyndebourne Festival), Chérubin, Falstaff, Tamerlano (Royal Opera House Covent Garden), A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Moses und Aron (Metropolitan Opera, New York), L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Don Carlo, Les Vêpres siciliennes, Juliette ou la clé des songes, Peter Grimes (Paris Opera), Les Troyens (Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich), Jenůfa, Mefistofele (Dutch National Opera), Partenope (Theater an der Wien), Tamerlano, Alcina (La Monnaie in Brussels); for the theatre: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, The Park, The Cordelia Dream (RSC), Six Characters in Search of an Author, Doctor Faustus, Hobson’s Choice (Young Vic), The Birthday Party, Nine Plays and a Recipe (Citizens Theatre, Glasgow).

He also created several stagings: Giorgiana (Buxton Festival), Anthropocène, The Devil Inside, Ghost Patrol, Rigoletto (Scottish Opera), Macbeth (Malmö, Sweden), Rigoletto, Boris Godunov (New Zealand Opera), The cunning little vixen, Turandot (Norrlands Opera, Sweden), Le Nozze di Figaro (BBC Television).
