Biography
Matthew Cairns holds a Master’s degree in Opera Performance from the University of Toronto. In 2022, he won the final of the Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and was a finalist in the 2022 Neue Stimmen Competition.
In 2018, he won First Prize in the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio Competition in Toronto, as well as the CBC Music Young Artist Development Award. He has been a member of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio. His repertoire includes Macduff (Macbeth), Don José (Carmen), the Messenger (Aida), the Prince of Persia (Turandot), the Witch (Hänsel und Gretel), the Gamekeeper (Rusalka), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Gherardo (Gianni Schicchi), Liberto (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Detlef (The Student Prince), Count Belfiore (La finta giardiniera), Sam Kaplan (Street Scene), Sam Sharkey / Lumberjack (Paul Bunyan), Nicias (Thaïs), Ismaele (Nabucco), the Drum Major (Wozzeck), and Mario Cavaradossi (Tosca).
During the 2026–2027 season, he will perform, among other roles, Sam Polk (Susannah) at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Mario Cavaradossi at the Opéra de Québec.
