Biography

Mezzo-soprano Madeleine Shaw studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and at the National Opera Studio. She is a former member of the Young Singer's Programme at English National Opera. 

Recent operatic performances include the title-role in Rhondda Rips It Up! by Elena Langer (World Premiere) and Annina in Der Rosenkavalier for the Welsh National Opera. She has appeared in The Cunning Little Vixen (The Forester's wife) and Die Valkyrie (Roßweise) for the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London, Rigoletto (Maddalena) at the Glyndebourne and English National Opera. She made her debut as Fricka (Das Rheingold) for the Longborough Festival and will return to the role in Die Valkyrie in June 2021. 

On the concert platform, Madeleine Shaw recently made her US debut as The Angel in The Dream of Gerontius (Edward Elgar) with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. At the BBC Proms she sung She Ancient in A Midsummer Marriage (Michael Tippett) with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis. She performed the Rückert Lieder by Mahler with the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Emilia (Otello) with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Gianandrea Noseda, and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the RPO and Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the Orchestra of Opera North.
