Biography

Luis F. Carvalho is a sets and costumes designer whose work spans the worlds of opera, theatre, dance, video (television and cinema) and fashion. Born in Portugal, he settled in London in the beginning of the 1990s to study theatre design at the Wimbledon School of Art and, later, fashion design at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

He designed the costumes of numerous opera productions: Edipo Re (INDA Teatro Greco Antico Siracusa), Peter Grimes (Royal Opera House, Teatro Real Madrid), Un Ballo in Maschera (Opéra national de Lorraine, Théâtres de Ville de Luxembourg, Opera Zuid, Pamplona Opera), Julius Caesar, Les Vêpres siciliennes and Carmen (Rome Opera), Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (Teatro Maggio Fiorentino), L’elisir d’amore (Opera Zuid).

He also designed the sets for Oceane (Deutsche Oper Berlin), Idomeneo (Teatro Real Madrid), Elektra (Teatro nacional São Carlos), La Fanciulla del West (Teatro alla Scala Milan) and Turn of the Screw (Opera National du Rhin), as well as sets and costumes for Cabaret (Lido, Paris), Ein Maskenball (Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden), Rappresentatione di anima et di corpo (Theater an der Wien), Carmen (Wuppertal Oper), Run Mary Run (Sadler's Wells) and La Bohème (Opera Zuid). 

In the worlds of cinema and television, he took part in BBC Proms 10 Pieces 2017 (BBC), BBC Proms 10 Pieces 2016 (BBC), Fall Forever – Ray Grant (World Wide Web), Close Up (Dance Short), Moulin Rouge Première partie (Tobacco Docks), Pearl Harbour Première partie (University College London), Toy Story 2 Première partie (Odeon London).
