Biography

Since 2012, Josep Pons has been the Music Director of Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. In 1985, he founded the Chamber Orchestra of the Teatre Lliure and, in 1993, the Jove Orquestra Simfònica de Catalunya. He also holds the position of Honorary Conductor of the Orquesta Nacional de España and of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, of which he was the Music Director and principal conductor. He was also the musical director for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In 1999 he received the Spanish National Music Prize granted by the Ministry of Culture.

He is a Member of the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts (Catalonia), he has been distinguished with the recognition of Doctor honoris causa from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. In 2019 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit (Order of Fine Arts). He has recorded over 50 albums for Harmonia Mundi and Deutsche Grammophon, earning numerous awards: Grammy Awards, Cannes Classical Awards, Académie du disque Charles Cros’s Grand Prize, Diapason d’Or and Choc de la Musique.

He runs regular productions with leading orchestras, performing throughout the world. He enjoys a close relationship with the Paris Orchestra, the Philharmonia, the Birmingham Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the NHK ORchestra in Tokyo, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, which he conducted many times for the BBC Proms in London.
