Biography

Born in 1993, Jessica Hung Han Yun is a British lighting designer. From a family of Mauritian-Chinese heritage, she grew up in Essex, England. Drawn from an early age to the storytelling potential of light on stage, she trained at Rose Bruford College, graduating in 2014. Her acknowledged influences include artists James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson, as well as lighting designer Paule Constable. After completing her studies, she gradually established herself within the British theatre scene.

From 2018 onwards, she designed the lighting for a number of acclaimed productions, including Hive City Legacy at London’s Roundhouse, The Human Voice at the Gate Theatre, Pah-La and Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner at the Royal Court, and Fairview at the Young Vic. In 2019, her work on Equus, produced by English Touring Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East, brought her significant professional recognition. She received a Knight of Illumination Award and was nominated for several other lighting design honours.

In 2020, she continued her rise with productions such as Blindness at the Donmar Warehouse and Dick Whittington at the National Theatre. The following year, she worked on Anna X, The Mirror and the Light, She Loves Me, and Home, a dance creation by choreographer Micaela Taylor for Rambert 2.

The year 2022 marked a major turning point in her career with My Neighbour Totoro, produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company at London’s Barbican. Her lighting design for the production received widespread acclaim.

That same year, she was named one of The Stage 25, a selection highlighting emerging talents expected to shape the future of live performance in the United Kingdom. Since then, Jessica Hung Han Yun has pursued an international career across theatre, dance, and installation art. Her recent work includes productions of Miss Saigon, Once on This Island, Lyonesse, Minority Report, Dr Strangelove, Wild Rose, Hamlet Hail to the Thief, and new productions of Hamlet at the National Theatre.
