James Rutherford first studied theology before pursuing vocal studies at the Royal College of Music in London. After winning the first International Wagner Competition of Seattle Opera in 2006, he quickly established himself through his interpretations of German Romantic opera. His repertoire includes roles such as Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), the title role in The Flying Dutchman, Wotan/The Wanderer (the Ring), Mandryka (Arabella), and Jochanaan (Salome). He has appeared at the Vienna State Opera, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Royal Opera House in London, San Francisco Opera, and the Bayreuth Festival.
His recent engagements include the title role in The Flying Dutchman at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Margarethen Open Air Festival, and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he will reprise the roles of Wotan (Die Walküre) and Hans Sachs during the 2025–2026 season.
James Rutherford collaborates regularly with conductors such as Adam Fischer, Simon Rattle, Simone Young, Antonio Pappano, and Axel Kober. His discography includes recordings of early 20th-century English songs, Wagner arias, and Schubert’s Schwanengesang and Winterreise.
