After completing a Baccalauréat in Art History and Drawing (1984), Hervé Pierre, born in 1965, studied Fine Arts at the Sorbonne University (Paris I). In 1986, he was awarded a grant from the Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet Foundation for Vocation. He won the Christian Dior Prize on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the House of Dior (1987).
A student at the Écoles de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in 1987 and 1988, he graduated top of his class in drawing and design. He joined Pierre Balmain’s Haute Couture studio alongside Erik Mortensen in July 1988. In July 1991, he presented his first Haute Couture collection at Pierre Balmain, followed by two further collections in January and July 1992.
With the creation of the costumes for Angelin Preljocaj’s ballet Parade (1993), he entered the world of dance for the first time. He repeated this experience by designing the costumes for Le Parc at the Paris Opera (1994) and for La Stravaganza for the New York City Ballet (1997). In 1999, he designed the costumes for Patrice Bart’s ballet Verdiana at the Berlin State Opera. Since 1997, Hervé Pierre has been based in the United States, where he has worked successively for Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Bill Blass, Lars Nilsson, and Carolina Herrera.
