Biography

Born in Liverpool, Harry Bicket studied at the Royal College of Music and Oxford University. Since 2007, he has been Artistic Director of The English Concert, an orchestra playing on period instruments, and since 2013 Chief Conductor of the Santa Fe Opera, where he has conducted Carmen, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Le Nozze di Figaro, Fidelio, La finta giardiniera, Roméo et Juliette, Alcina, Candide and Così fan tutte. Guest appearances include Metropolitan Opera New York (Rodelinda, The Magic Flute, Le Nozze di Figaro, La clemenza di Tito, Giulio Cesare and Così fan tutte), Lyric Opera Chicago (Ariodante, Orphée et Eurydice, Carmen, Rinaldo), Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (Agrippina, Lucio Silla, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Theater an der Wien (Iphigénie en Tauride, Mithridate), Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Theodora, Orlando), Royal Danish Opera (Orfeo), Glimmerglass Festival (Partenope, Agrippina), Edinburgh Festival (La clemenza di Tito), Spoleto Festival (Giasone, Tamerlano, Merlin's Island), English National Opera (Orfeo, Ariodante, Sémélé, Xerxes, Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda), Bayerische Staatsoper Munich (Rinaldo, Ariodante, Serse, Orlando, The Barber of Seville, Il Seraglio and The Magic Flute), Los Angeles Opera (Giulio Cesare, L'incoronazione di Poppea).

He also conducted many symphony orchestras on the leading international stages. Recent seasons with The English Concert have featured Rinaldo, Ariodante and Serse. Other highlights include his own arrangements of works composed by Mozart for mechanical organ, Bach’s Adventskantaten, or the ballet Remembrance for the English National Ballet Theatre. The 2023/24 season includes several tours for Rodelinda in the United States and Asia, L'incoronazione di Poppea in Barcelona and Madrid and Don Giovanni in Santa Fe.
