Hans Toelstede Lighting designer

Biography

Born in Germany, Hans Toelstede studied electronics and theatre technology and began working at the Landestheater in Wilhelmshaven, the Hamburg State Opera, the Stadttheater in Wiesbaden, and the Bayreuth Festival. From 1970 to 1974, he was part of the Stadttheater Wiesbaden, and from 1980 to 1995, he served as chief lighting designer at the Cologne Opera.

He has designed lighting for numerous opera productions at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, the Liceu in Barcelona, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Teatro Colón in Bogotá, the Amsterdam Opera, the Opera of Flanders, the Edinburgh Festival, the Bregenz Festival, the Salzburg Festival (between 1985 and 1992), the Royal Opera House in London, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Hamburg State Opera, New York City Opera, the Los Angeles Music Center, the Houston Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Theater an der Wien (including the musicals Elisabeth and Jekyll and Hyde), as well as in Florence, Venice, Turin, Athens, Oslo, Hong Kong, and elsewhere.

He works regularly with Willy Decker (Eugene Onegin, La Clemenza di Tito, Lulu, The Flying Dutchman at the Paris National Opera), Harry Kupfer (Tannhäuser in Zurich), Michael Hampe (The Return of Ulysses at the Opera of Flanders), Peter Konwitschny (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Don Carlos, and Der Freischütz in Hamburg), and Karoline Gruber (Lear by Aribert Reimann and La Ville morte in Hamburg).
