Belgian-American conductor Giulio Cilona is the recipient of the 10th Ernst von Schuch Conducting Prize (2024), awarded at the Semperoper Dresden, and prize winner of the 2022 International Opera Conducting Competition at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie. He has served as Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and as Principal Guest Conductor at the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy.
His recent debuts with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Staatskapelle Dresden, Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, Staatskapelle Weimar, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as at the Rossini Opera Festival, Norwegian National Opera, Opéra de Lyon, and the Royal Danish Opera, have been met with remarkable critical and public acclaim.
In April 2025, he achieved notable success stepping in at short notice for Fabio Luisi with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, conducting Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, returning only weeks after his debut with the orchestra.
The 2026–2027 season will see his return to the Opéra National de Lorraine with Verdi’s Otello, alongside debuts with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and at the Opéra national de Paris. He will also conduct symphonic concerts at Opéra de Lyon, with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI in Turin, the Haydn Orchestra in Bolzano, and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano.
He will make his debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam conducting Fausto by Louis Bertin in concert, followed by a return to the Norwegian National Opera with Verdi’s Otello. Further engagements in the season include two new productions in Germany—Leonora by Paër at the Semperoper Dresden and Madama Butterfly at Oper Köln—as well as his debut at Teatro alla Scala.
