Ekaterina Gubanova studied singing at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in her native Moscow and then at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki before entering the Young Artists Programme at London’s Royal Opera House. In 2005, she sang the role of Brangaene in Tristan und Isolde at the Paris Opera under the direction of Valery Gergiev and then in Baden-Baden, Rotterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, Saint Petersburg, and Munich... She has since performed the role of Fricka in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre at the Staatsoper in Berlin and at la Scala in Milan with Daniel Barenboim. She made her debut appearance in Japan (Verdi’s Requiem in Tokyo) and Italy (Clytemnestre in Iphigénie en Aulide at the Rome Opera) under the direction of Riccardo Muti. She has also participated in the White Nights of Saint Petersburg Festival (Eboli in Don Carlo, Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust). She has been invited regularly to the New York Metropolitan Opera (Giulietta in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Giovanna Seymour in Anna Bolena, Eboli). She tackled the role of Amneris (Aida) in 2009 at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich under the baton of Daniele Gatti then performed it again in Japan and Israel as part of a tour undertaken by Milan’s La Scala. She has also performed at the Verona Amphitheatre and the Chorégies d’Orange opera festival. More recently, she appeared in Die Walküre and Das Rheingold at the Berlin Staatsoper, Milan’s La Scala and the Proms in London. She has also performed in Don Carlo, first at Milan’s La Scala, then in Florence and Munich. Her other performances have included Tristan und Isolde in Salzburg, Buenos Aires and Madrid, Rusalka (the Foreign Princess) in Chicago, Norma (Adalgisa) in Barcelona and Munich, Bluebeard’s Castle in Toronto, and Werther (Charlotte) at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. In concert, she has sung Jocasta from Oedipus Rex (in London and Stockholm with Esa-Pekka Salonen), Verdi’s Requiem at Milan’s La Scala and the Berlin Staatsoper with Daniel Barenboim, then in Los Angeles with Gustavo Dudamel and in Vienna with Riccardo Muti. She has also interpreted Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Des Knaben Wunderhorn and the Rückert Lieder.
Projects: Amneris at the Vienna Staatsoper, Eboli at the Dresden Semperoper, Santuzza (Cavalleria Rusticana) at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Fricka and Waltraute (The Ring Cycle) at the Berlin Staatsoper, Brangaene and Amneris at the New York Metropolitan Opera and the title role of Carmen at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
