Ekaterina Gubanova was born in Moscow and studied voice at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki before joining the Young Artists Program of the Royal Opera House in London. In 2005, she sang Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at the Paris Opera under the direction of Valery Gergiev and reprised the role in Baden-Baden, Rotterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, Saint Petersburg and Munich... She appeared as Fricka in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre at the Berlin Staatsoper and Milan’s La Scala with Daniel Barenboim and she made her Italian debut as Clytemnestre in Iphigénie en Aulide at the Rome opera under the direction of Riccardo Muti. She makes regular guest appearances at New York’s Metropolitan Opera (Giulietta in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Giovanna Seymour in Anna Bolena, and Eboli in Don Carlo). She also performed the role of Amneris (Aida) in 2009 at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and reprised it at the Chorégies d’Orange, the Verona Arena and for a tour of Japan and Israel with Milan’s La Scala. More recently, she appeared in Die Walküre and Das Rheingold at the Berlin Staatsoper, Milan’s La Scala, The Proms in London and at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. She also performed in productions of Don Carlo at La Scala in Milan, Munich, Saint Petersburg, Toulouse, New York, Dresden, the 2017 Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and the Paris Opera (where she sang the French version). She has also appeared in Tristan und Isolde (in Salzburg, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Paris, Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre and the Berlin Staatsoper, Rusalka (the Foreign Princess) in Chicago, Norma (Adalgisa) in Barcelona and Munich, Bluebeard’s Castle in Toronto and the Paris Opera, Werther (Charlotte) at Berlin’s Deutsche Oper, Tristan und Isolde and Aida at the Metropolitan Opera, Aida in Vienna and at the Verona Arena, Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette in Chicago with Riccardo Muti, Venus (Tannhäuser) at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and the 2019 Bayreuth Festival. During the 2019-2020 season, she sang the roles of Fricka in Berlin and at the Paris Opera, Brangäne in Berlin (the Deutsche Oper) and Bologna, and Amnéris at the Vienna Staasoper. She also appeared in concert, performing Verdi’s Requiem, first at Milan’s La Scala and the Berlin Staatsoper with Daniel Barenboim, then in Los Angeles with Gustavo Dudamel and finally in Vienna with Riccardo Muti. She also sang Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Rückert Lieder. In addition, recorded the complete Ring Cycle (Fricka) with Valery Gergiev for the Mariinsky label.
