Biography
After obtaining a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Warwick, Christopher Maltman studied singing at the Royal Academy of Music. He won the Lieder Prize at the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1997. A Grammy Award winner, he performs on the world’s leading opera stages.
In recent seasons, his roles have included Leporello (Don Giovanni) in London and Vienna, Count di Luna (Il trovatore) in Washington, Amfortas (Parsifal) in Geneva, Ford (Falstaff) in New York, Wotan (Die Walküre) in Naples and London, the title role in Rigoletto, Scarpia (Tosca) and Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) in Berlin, Wotan (Das Rheingold) and the Wanderer (Siegfried) in London, Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte), Escamillo (Carmen), Scarpia and Don Pizarro (Fidelio) in Vienna, and Iago (Otello) and Jupiter (Die Liebe der Danae) in Munich.
During the 2026–2027 season, he will perform, among other roles, Jack Rance (La fanciulla del West) in New York, Wotan (Die Walküre) in Salzburg, Scarpia in London, and Bluebeard (Bluebeard’s Castle) in Budapest.
