Brigands in search of a new exploit, a Spanish delegation, a massive heist, a not-so-honest cashier, carabinieri who always arrive too late: the ingredients, disguises, twists and turns in Offenbach’s opéra‑bouffe, first performed in 1869 at the Théâtre des Variétés, are so abundant that they make the story utterly extravagant.
Premiered in 1779 at the Palais Esterházy, this immensely expressive “azione teatrale”, in which accompanied recitatives merge with arias and ensembles, is performed by the artists in residence at the Academy in a new staging by Simon Valastro.
This series invites viewers to follow the rehearsals of emblematic excerpts from the second act of The Nutcracker in Rudolf Nureyev’s version, featuring Étoile dancers Dorothée Gilbert as Clara and Guillaume Diop as the Prince.
In July 2024, eighteen young dancers from around the world were selected through the Paris Opera’s external audition process. They form the first class of the Junior Ballet—a new and ambitious company within the institution. For these artists, aged seventeen to twenty-three, joining the Paris Opera is a dream come true and the beginning of a two-year journey.
