Train the conductors of tomorrow

Providing outstanding, gender-balanced training in opera conducting

Each season, the Paris National Opera Academy welcomes a male and a female opera conductor in residence to help them refine their skills and build a professional network.

These artists assist guest conductors at the Opera during several productions staged at the Opéra Bastille or the Palais Garnier.

This season, the Academy is supporting two opera conductors: the British Josephine Korda and the French Swann Van Rechem.

Did you know?

In 2020, women represented only 4% of conductors in France, and only one woman led a permanent French orchestra (out of 30 orchestras).

There are already conducting programs specifically for women (Dallas, London, Leeds, Cardiff, Dublin), but none tailored to the musical particularities of opera, which requires specific skills and knowledge distinct from those needed for symphonic conducting, particularly due to the connection with the stage.

The Opera regularly entrusts guest female conductors with the direction of the Orchestra.

In 25/26, the Opera will welcome Oksana Lyniv, Speranza Scappucci, Keri-Lynn Wilson, Chloé Dufresne (a former Academy resident), Marta Gardolińska, Andrea Quinn, Zoe Zeniodi, and Karen Kamensek.
